TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox Al Jazeera reporters, posing as Chinese nationals who were looking to launder large sums of money, were offered several ways to remove all stains of corruption from their dirty cash.
TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox For many Russians, though, the corporate exodus is not a question of ethics or human rights, but quality of life. TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox Vladislav is an entrepreneur in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, about four hours' drive from Ukraine's Mariupol, much of which has been destroyed by Russian forces.
TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox Despite Rostov-on-Don’s proximity to the front lines, the situation in the city is relatively calm. TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox When carmakers began announcing their exit from Russia, Vladislav, who has more than 10 years of experience selling used cars, realised that there would be a spike in demand and used his industry contacts to find “trusted partners in Western countries and establish supply chains”. TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox Vladislav estimates that his company sells about 500 cars per year, including models from BMW, Mercedes, Kia, Lexus and Volkswagen.
TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox "We have access to markets in South Korea, the USA, Europe, the Arab Emirates and China. We can bring in almost any cars that people desire," Vladislav, whose surname is being withheld due to safety concerns, told Al Jazeera in a phone interview. TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox Vladislav said his company works with brands that “on paper” have officially left Russia.
TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox "Legally, they are not involved, but they are well aware that their cars are coming into Russia. For the most part, they turn a blind eye. We don’t talk about politics. Business relationships - that’s what’s important”.
TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox Vladislav, like other businessmen who spoke to Al Jazeera, declined to talk about his supply chains in detail. TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox The Trump family is now deeply invested in crypto, with ventures like First Lady Melania Trump’s coin and a stake in World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency firm founded in 2024.
TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox While government officials have financial disclosure requirements, and regulatory agencies can monitor the goings-on of officials, critics have warned of conflicts of interest, as Trump backs crypto after once opposing it, potentially using policy to boost his own gains. TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox By offering security and counterterrorism courses to students from repressive regimes without appropriate checks, British institutions risk complicity in torture.
TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox Across the UK, pro-Palestinian protests in reaction to the war in Gaza have placed universities’ response to human rights concerns under the spotlight. But concerns about links between Britain’s higher education institutions and human rights abuses are not limited to one area. TrumphasopenedaPandorasbox A new investigation by Freedom from Torture has found that UK universities are offering postgraduate security and counterterrorism education to members of foreign security forces, including those serving some of the world’s most repressive regimes. These institutions are offering training to state agents without scrutinising their human rights records, or pausing to consider how British expertise might end up being exploited to silence, surveil or torture.
